Sorting Through: Lillian Bassman, Elegance in LighT - Sotheby's

I was scrolling through the upcoming auctions at Sotheby's and was immediately captivated by this collection of photography by Lillian Bassman. Photography is probably the area I have the least amount of knowledge in within the art world, but quality and unique photography has always interest me. It is different than more traditional art forms because the artist has to create their perspective from reality and the literal scene in front of them.

This collection of photographs is particularly interesting as it showcases fashion and femininity in such a stark and dramatic way. And here are some of my favorites from the 9 piece show.

The drama! The range of totally black shadows contrasted with the white highlights in her skin and dress makes the whole image feel elevated and richer. I can't even exactly pinpoint what it is, but I am just captivated by this picture. I want to be her just as much as I want to hang this photo in my home. And that says a lot because the prospect of hanging art of other people in my home normally repulses me.

Chanel is naturally sophisticated and elegant, but you have to give credit to Lillian Bassman and other luxury goods photographers for curating scenes that enhance the beauty of the products. The phrase it is all in the styling can also be attributed to how a campaign photograph or advertisement is styled. The way the model's dark eye makeup covered eyes turn to the camera and thus the audience really adds a level of intrigue to the whole image.

I encourage everyone to check out all the works in the salon exhibition. It is obvious that Lillian Bassman was a gifted photographer, and this collection has made me more curious on the photographers behind other iconic campaigns.
