Every time I think I understand what is happening in this painting, I get confused again.

Not sure what's going on with the paint and covering the woman's face and the subsequent marble statue placed on top. I keep thinking the peach colored candles are fingers. Maybe they are? It took longer than I am willing to admit to realize these are sconces and not candelabras.
