Girl with the Wide Brimmed Hat | Malcolm T. Liepke, 1991
Girl with the Wide Brimmed Hat | Malcolm T. Liepke, 1991

While the aged yellow tones of the painting make it seem like it could have been painted in the 1790s, the moment being captured is somehow so 90s to me. A girl playing dress up with elaborate accessories has been going on forever, but the attitude of the girl could only come from a girly that grew up on the Spice Girls, had a collection of plastic black chokers, and eventually would learn the choreography to Britney Spear’s music videos in her free time.

The painting feels like the family got a fun photo of their daughter during a photoshoot at their local JC Penney and thought how do we turn this phot into something we can hang in a formal living room.
