Horse Saddled with Time | Salvador Dali, 1984
Horse Saddled with Time | Salvador Dali, 1984

Sculpture Alert! I can’t believe this is the first time I am featuring a sculpture as the Daily Art Find. I mean the sculptures I would want to own are few and far between so in that way, it can’t be that shocking, but I do occasionally like to look at sculptures. And this is a great example of a sculpture that I am loving looking at, and could be interested in displaying in my home under the right circumstances.

I love Dali’s melting clocks, and the iconic symbol is beautifully used as the horse’s saddle in this work. It is otherwise a pretty standard, yet impressive, sculpture of a horse. The teal melting clock adds a pop of color to the bronze horse and also carries most of the weight in giving the sculpture a deeper meaning and message. The melting clock is a surrealist interpretation of a saddle, while also make a statement on how horses, like all living creatures, are confined by time in many ways. A saddle on a horse takes the animal from a wild and natural state to a state of existing within a society. If that even makes sense. If it doesn’t, please ignore and know that I think this sculpture is pretty.

The more I look at it, the more I can picture it as a centerpiece on a bookshelf in my future home.
