Expensive Vase #4 | Andy Dixon, 2015

Lovely vase! And according to the title, expensive vase too. I would be open to paying good money for a vase like this, but I think I like the painting of it better. A painting is harder to knock over and break (I type this as I am knocking on wood to reverse the jinx).

The bright background colors and colorful interpretation of shading make this piece feel very fun and youthful which contrasts with the typical formality of vases like this. It appears this piece is done with both oil paint and oil pastels, and I love how the different materials are layered together to add more detail to the vase. The less uniform look of the oil pastels add to the youthful perspective of the whole piece and transform the formal subject matter into something playful that pairs well with the overall color palette.
