APORIA (I) | Sophie Reinhold, 2022

It’s under the sea, but we are most definitely not under the sea. It’s like sea creatures being displayed in the sunset sky like fallen Hunger Games tributes. The starfish is certainly a star in this piece, and the octopus tentacles feel unavoidable as they come through from everywhere.

I have always been so intrigued by the layering in Sophie’s pieces. Sometime it appears that she has painted a thin layer separately and then placed it on the surface. The edges are just so precise it’s hard to believe everything was created on the same surface. And maybe it wasn’t. I don’t know.

Also when I first saw this, I was imagining secret eyes within the tentacles, and I thought I was going crazy. Turns out, the eyes I was sensing are actually in little circles at the top and bottom of what I am calling the blob section.
