Sophie Reinhold was one of the first artists I discovered in my new era of monitoring new art and art auctions. It is so much fun to find all these new artists that are still active in their careers and constantly making new pieces. Ever since I discovered Sophie's art, I have imagined having a large work by Sophie Reinhold hanging in my future home. I will have to be careful in choosing the piece that I will bring into my house because Sophie is a perpetrator of what I call the "case of the hidden face" which is when an artwork that seems abstract or impressionistic actually has a person or face or eyes hidden within. I have yet to find anything of the sort in this piece, but you can never be too careful.
I love the delightful river scene depicted in this painting. The trees feel as as if they are made of negative space, but upon closure inspection, the trees are some of the only areas that don't carry the texture of the canvas. The layering of the painting seems so complex yet all the layers and different mediums come together so cohesively. The river scene is calming and peaceful and is contrasted by the orange panels on each side showcasing skulls. I appreciate how there is still an essence of orange throughout the painting that almost feels like the dreadful orange skulls are encroaching on the moment of natural beauty happening in the center. It is incredibly complicated and thought-provoking yet subdued enough to hang in the hallway on the way to my home bar. And huge shout out to that bird on the river banks. Big fan of him (or her?) in this piece.
