This piece is a great example of the natural world and manufactured world colliding. The painting illustrates a modern blue geometric design overlayed by the shadow of a nearby tree. It gives the illusion that you are viewing a piece of abstract modern art that has been placed by a window and the shadow of a tree’s branches and leaves just happens to be falling over the work. To be precise, it is like you are viewing the art at 1:47pm with the sun beaming in at just the right angle.
Park Yunji has a whole collection of pieces that focus on the intricacy of tree’s shadows, but this one seems slightly different as the color and art beneath the shadow seems almost equally as important as the shadow while many of her other paintings in this series has simpler backgrounds that allow the shadow to steal the focus.
