GOING TANDEM | Werner Bronkhorst, 2024
GOING TANDEM | Werner Bronkhorst, 2024

So interesting to see how the way paint is applied can impact the purpose and role of the paint in a picture. With how thick, this paint is applied, the paint is able to create it’s own shadows that move as the light source moves. There are these real shadows created by the thickness of the paint, but there are also skillfully done painted shadows shown in the silhouettes of the bikers. It is a careful balance of manipulating the paint to do things for you, but also making thoughtful decisions so as to ensure this piece remains a painting rather than a something that is more sculptural. The use of the paints’ texture also adds some more interest to aspects of the painting that would just be large color-blocked areas if the paint was applied in the standard even layers.
