Untitled (It’s Yellow) | Sam Gilliam, 1973
Untitled (It’s Yellow) | Sam Gilliam, 1973

No title needed. It speaks for itself. It’s yellow. Amongst other colors, but those don’t matter because at the end of the day, it’s yellow.

The yellow appears the to be entirely concentrated on the top layer of the piece. It was the final addition that makes this painting what it is. The base of the piece consists of abstract placements of shades of blue, pink, and purple paint. That curated layer is then overwhelmed an abundance of yellow that covers a majority of the paper and steals all the attention. Yellow has a way of grabbing the eye and stealing the thunder.
